MAFF-represented fire departments are joining the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in celebrating National Fire Prevention Week. The theme this year is “Cooking safety starts with YOU.” Several area departments are hosting events during September and October in honor of National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8-14, 2023. Fire Prevention Week is observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which Oct. 9 falls to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of Oct. 8-9, 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. Firefighters will visit Onsted Community Elementary School, grades kindergarten through second, to give fire safety presentations, participate in truck tours and go through the smoke trailer. After the presentations, the children make fire safety posters and submit them to their teachers. Each teacher chooses one student, based on their poster, as the winner. Firefighters will visit local elementary schools with their Fire Safety Smoke Trailer to provide a hands on fire safety experience, including show and tell on the fire truck. They will demonstrate and discuss fire safety with the students and show them a video inside the smoke trailer. After instruction, firefighters smoke up the trailer and the students practice safe fire escape through the windows and door. A firefighter will dress up in fire gear with a mask on so students see what they look like and hear how they sound to prevent them from being fearful of firefighters during a rescue.
